PRESS RELEASE 1/2006

“GRAN FONDO INTERNAZIONALE FELICE GIMONDI”: THE ONLY ITALIAN EVENT FOR THE UCI GOLDEN BIKE 2006 SEASON

For the UCI Golden Bike circuit, the international cycling federation has chosen “Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi” which will take place next 7th May 2006 in Bergamo (11th edition).

For the UCI Golden Bike circuit, the international cycling federation has chosen “Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi” which will take place next 7th May 2006 in Bergamo (11th edition).

During the meeting organized last 11th November 2005 in Aigle, Switzerland, the UCI (International Cycling Union) confirmed “Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi” the only Italian event for 2006 Golden Bike. It is a prestigious goal underlined by what the new President, Pat McQuaid, said about the promoters of this competition.

In Aigle, there were all representatives of 8 events which will take place in 2006: besides the new President, David Lappartient, the person in charge of “Cycling for All” and the entire UCI committee, whose chairman was Mattias Kaestener, Event Coordinator.

The balance of 2005 edition has been really flattering: 77,600 cyclists have taken part in all 8 events. The objective for next years will be 100,000 entrances.

The main innovation for future will be a “Golden Bike Passport” which will let cyclists benefit by reductions and travelling facilities.

The UCI Golden Bike was created by the UCI in 1999 and it includes 8 events in just as many countries (7 in Europe and 1 in Africa). All events have to follow strict safety and organisational rules checked by the UCI.

More information on regulations and entrances will be available at: www.ucigoldenbike.com

PRESS RELEASE 2/2006

OPEN ENTRIES FOR THE “GRAN FONDO INTERNAZIONALE FELICE GIMONDI”

Bergamo si prepara ad ospitare l’undicesima edizione della ormai famosa kermesse ciclistica.

In a year characterized by important events, Bergamo is preparing a classic race into the world of amateur cycling. The “Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi”, the competition dedicated to the big Italian champion, will start next 7th May. For 2006 edition, the organization has created a commemorative T-shirt (it is the 11° version; for more information about the previous models, please visit qui) linked to “Milano-Sanremo 1974”, one of Gimondi’s victories (this pistachio green T-shirt can be bought at the time of registration). The first gate will be reserved to: the 93 “Puntuali” (athletes who finished all past editions), women, guests, the first 100 classified in Gran Fondo, the first 25 classified in Media Fondo and the first 25 classified in Fondo of 2005 edition. The “Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi” is the only Italian race which belongs to the UCI Golden Bike circuit. Created in 1999, it includes eight events in just as many countries (South Africa, Belgium, Netherlands, Spain, France, Switzerland, Germany and Italy) which have to follow strict safety and organisational rules and regulations, checked by UCI inspectors.

The G.M.Sport has confirmed three different routes: Fondo (95,7 km), Medio Fondo (134,5 km) and Gran Fondo (165,3 km). These routes will travel along valleys around Bergamo, from Selvino to Valtaleggio, from Berbenno to Valle Imagna (with a difference of height of 2,620 m), in a picturesque landscape of hard slopes and characteristic villages.

After the big success of previous editions, the village will be again at “Lazzaretto”, next to the Bergamo’ stadium. In this place, athletes will find not only the village, but also Expo Gimondi, a fair dedicated to businesses which want to display their articles. Expo will open on Friday, May 5th, and it will give athletes and curious people the possibility of discovering new products.

Entries can be made directly to G. M. Sport, via G. Da Campione, 24/b – 24124 Bergamo (Tel.: +39 035 211 721 – Fax.: +39 035 4227 971) or filling the registration form which can be downloaded from the site qui Registration deadline: 15th April 2006.

PRESS RELEASE 3/2006

100 DAYS TO GO FOR THE GRAN FONDO INTERNAZIONALE FELICE GIMONDI

Waiting for the bicycle race which will start next 7th May.

With the opening of entries (9th January), the organization officially started. Thanks to its experience of several years, G.M.Sport is able to propose the 11° edition of a classic race into the world of amateur cycling. To prepare a competition like this, many aspects must be considered and connected. You find here few examples.

CELEBRACTION: for 2006 edition this kermesse will celebrate the “Milano-Sanremo 1974” race, one of Gimondi’s victories. Apart from the traditional commemorative T-shirt, some winners of past “Milano-Sanremo” will take part in it, to challenge Gimondi and live again emotions never forgotten. The 2006 graphic leitmotiv will be the Italian champion crossing the finishing line in Sanremo. This image will appear on all the material, from depliants to folders, from leaflets to posters.

COMMUNICATION: from February to April about 25.000 leaflets will be distributed among the main competitions which will take place in Italy and abroad. The interested athletes will find the registration form and all the information useful to prepare for this big appointment. Moreover, thousands of messages will be sent by via e-mail or sms to all participants in previous editions.

ACCOMMODATIONS: the organization is collecting data about different kind of accommodations (hotels, bed and breakfasts, campings, etc.), to offer a solution for every need.

VOLUNTEERS: team spirit is important for a so complicated competition. G.M.Sport can rely on about 600 volunteers who will take care of refreshment places, distribution of race packages and numbers, and start-finish logistics. (to co-operate, fill in the form available in the site www.felicegimondi.com).

ROUTES: the organization is getting in touch with municipalities (34) because they should check feather-edge and persuade people to leave their cars in garages and go out to applaud cyclists. For a more cheerful atmosphere, musical groups will play along the three routes.

MEDALS AND TROPHIES: sculptor Antonio Rando is creating the new bronze bas-relief (for the first three classified) and the medal (for all athletes who will finish the competition).

EXPOGIMONDI: starting from May, 5th (2.00 p.m.) everyone will be able to visit the fair placed into “Lazzaretto”, next to the Bergamo’ stadium. In this village businesses will display their articles and athletes and curious people will discover innovations and trends of the new season.

To discover all secrets of the “Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi”, please visit www.felicegimondi.com.

PRESS RELEASE 4/2006

60 DAYS TO GO FOR GRAN FONDO INTERNAZIONALE FELICE GIMONDI

Waiting for the important race which will take place next 7th May in Bergamo.

It’s nearly Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi and numbers prove it.
Beginning from 9th January, the official opening of entries, more than 2000 athletes entered their names for this race. According to this trend, about 4000 cyclists should recall “Milano-Sanremo 1974”, the Felice Gimondi’s victory linked to 2006 edition. In order to better celebrate this event, G.M.Sport invited some champions who were able to win that race in the past. Michele Dancelli (1970), Roger De Vlaeminck (1973, 1978, 1979), Giuseppe Saronni (1983), Francesco Moser (1984), Gianni Bugno (1990), Claudio Chiappucci (1991), Maurizio Fondriest (1993) and Mario Cipollini (2002): Bergamo is waiting for these famous names to celebrate Gimondi.

Professionalism and seriousness have always characterized Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi. They have been confirmed again by belonging to UCI Golden Bike 2006. This circuit includes 8 events in just as many countries (South Africa, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland and Germany), chosen according to strict technical-organisational rules. For the 2006 season, they propose the UCI Traveller’s Club. Registration fees are 30 euros and they include a UCI Traveller’s Club passport and a Santini jersey. Club members have the chance of becoming a “Gold Rider”: each race corresponds to a stamp on the passport, which can be filled in over a number of years. Once the passport has 8 stamps corresponding to the different events, the athlete becomes a “Gold Rider” and she/he will be able to access to the VIP area at each UCI Golden Bike race and other facilitations.

Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi gives a prize to its loyal athletes. The 93 “Puntuali”, cyclists who took part in all the past editions, will start from the first gate, with guests, women, the first 100 classified in Gran Fondo 2005, the first 25 in Medio Fondo 2005 and the first 25 in Fondo 2005.

G.M.Sport is thinking about ExpoGimondi too, the fair which will be prepared at “Lazzaretto”, next to the Bergamo’s stadium. Societies interested in sport, free time and tourism will receive leaflets with all useful information about this event. Their stands will be a good chance to communicate with end consumers.

G.M.Sport is proud of announcing that an ambitious goal has been achieved: 50.000 Euros have been given to “Amici del Cuore” of Torre Boldone, a little town near Bergamo.
During Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi (Bergamo) and GimondiBike (Iseo), an international mountainbike race, volunteers of “Amici del Cuore” organize Nutella Party and Pasta Party Pagani. In exchange for their support, they receive large sums of money for their humanitarian projects.
In order to celebrate this important result, a meeting took place last 29th March 2006.
There were Ettore Ongis, editor of “L’Eco di Bergamo”, the most important newspaper of the city, representatives of G.M.Sport and Felice Gimondi, the Italian champion. He handed a symbolic cheque to Emilio Colombo, President of “Amici del Cuore”. More cyclists will take part in Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi, organized in Bergamo on 7th May. FCI introduced a daily card for amateurs who, even if they don’t belong to cycle associations, would like to run Gran Fondo races. PAOLO ARESI WINS THE JOURNALISTIC PRIZE
“PEDALANDO CON GIMONDI, FELICE DI SCRIVERLO”

He is the winner of the seventh edition of the competition linked to Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi

Paolo Aresi is the winner of the seventh edition of the journalistic prize “Pedalando con Gimondi, Felice di scriverlo”, born to award a prize to the numerous journalists and to promote this bicycle race linked to the Italian champion. The winning article is entitled: “La Felice Gimondi è anche e soprattutto una vera sofferenza” and it has been published on “Ciclismo bergamasco” last June 2005. The rhythm of the article is similar to the spirit which characterises this Gran Fondo. The author talks about athletes who are inclined to toil, pushed only by their passion.
Here you can read an abstract:
“We must say it and Felice can not take offence. Most of all, “La Gimondi” is suffering. You are ready to start and all people near you sprint like bullets shot by a machine-gunner, like gazelles pursued by leopards. If you are lucky (or unlucky) enough to start from the first line, you can run the risk to be submerged by a tsumani because behind you there are 400-500 cyclists.
Suffering starts now. Because you do not want to be in the rear and you oppose your feeble strengths to better prepared people. There is always somebody who comes out from behind you to surpass you. You can run “La Gimondi” like this. One friend of mine, Gabriele Bugada, told me another way. He started and punctured one wheel only after four kilometres. He became the last cyclist […] and ascending position after position, he met genial old men near refreshment-rooms […]. He discovered another Gimondi, the less agonistic one. He realised that the athletes at the end of the group run the right race, maybe […].”
Paolo Aresi suggested two different points of view of the same competition. He wins a Bianchi loom, which will be handed directly by Felice Gimondi during the prize-giving ceremony (on 7th May).

PRESS RELEASE 11/2006

GRAN FONDO INTERNAZIONALE FELICE GIMONDI
HAS BEEN OFFICIALLY PRESENTED

Bergamo is ready for the 11th edition of the bicycle race which will start on Sunday, May 7th.

Yesterday morning, the 11th edition of Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi has been presented to press in Sala Traini, at the head office of the main sponsor Credito Bergamasco.
On behalf of his bank, Cristiano Carrus, vice-president, welcome those present and pointed out that it was a big honour to his bank to be the main sponsor of this competition, because “in Italy, Felice Gimondi was the representative of an exciting and thrilling sport”. Television let this sport become famous among Italians and audience could share athletes’ happiness and tiredness. Salvatore Longo, the questor of Bergamo, hoped for a race characterized by security and peace.
During the press conference, Michele Gamba, the president of Bergamo FCI, said that on Sunday, May 7th there will be twelve gran fondos. Therefore, it should be really very important to fix rules, in order to avoid problems of different kind.
Felice Gimondi said that this competition “has grown-up”. Forty years after his first victory (Parigi-Roubaix), his enthusiasm is always the same, “time goes by, but I do not realize it”. In fact the champion thinks about future: he would like to create a permanent circuit for this Gran Fondo, that can be travelled over all the year long (such as for GimondiBike, Iseo), and a “Nembro-Selvino” slope to be timed. Then, he remembered his “Milano-Sanremo” (1974), celebrated in this edition, and he said that, to tell the truth, it started few months before, during “Paris-Nice” when Merckx, his big enemy, fell ill! The day of the race, neither the bad weather, nor the difficult circuit, prevented him from winning. He had a lead of 1’ 53”, the best result from 1949 until today.
Ettore Ongis, the editor of “L’Eco di Bergamo”, wanted to reflect about the graphic leitmotiv of 2006 edition. Felice Gimondi crosses the finishing line first, hands up, and he wears the jersey of World Champion. It is really difficult to win twice. But for Gimondi it is easy, because of his disposition, his love for simple things.
We will wait for you on Sunday, May 7 th, near Lazzaretto (Bergamo), for the 11th edition of Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi.

A BIG SUCCESS FOR THE
GRAN FONDO INTERNAZIONALE FELICE GIMONDI

Numerous athletes for the gran fondo which will start on Sunday, 7th May (Bergamo).

It is few days to the 11th edition of the Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi and appreciations have already arrived at G. M. Sport, the organising committee. To confirm the value of this sporting kermesse, a must for all people who love cycling, 3.800 cyclists will start on Sunday, 7th May.
Even if the same day in Italy there will be eleven gran fondos, numbers want to give a prize to professionalism and seriousness which characterise the organising committee.
Thanks to a long experience, results are really significant and this aspect is confirmed by the champions who will start beside Felice Gimondi: Fabio May, silver medal at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City (2002) and the racer Roberto Locatelli, Moto GP World Champion 125 (2000).
As usual, every edition of the Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi is linked to a Gimondi’s victory: this year they have chosen “Milano-Sanremo” (1974). In a symbolic hand over between past and present, from the first grid will start few winners of past editions (names are top secret).
Athletes will be able to choose between three different routes: the red one for Fondo (95.7 km), the green one for Medio Fondo (134.5 km) and the blue one for Gran Fondo (165.3 km).
Start will be on Sunday, 7th May, at 7 o’clock, from Lazzaretto (Bergamo), while race packages will be delivered Friday, May 5th, from 2.00pm to 8.00pm and Saturday, May 6th, from 10.00 am to 7.00 pm.

RUMSAS IS THE KING OF THE GRAN FONDO INTERNAZIONALE FELICE GIMONDI

As usual, big success for the eleventh edition of the Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi run today in Bergamo.

Raimondas Rumsas has come in first in the gran fondo: with his ninth victory in this season, the cyclist has confirmed himself among the best athletes of this race. A foreseen victory, but not less deserved. The athlete of Team Guru Parkpre Selle Italia has led the race from the very beginning, crossing the finishing line in 4: 28’ 19”. Behind him, in a “race into the race”, Bertoletti Simone, Team Pennelli Cinghiale, and Podestà Matteo, MG.K VIS-LGL-Cinelli, have competed for the second place. Bertoletti has got the better of Podestà (4: 33’, 4: 34’ 06”). About women, Monica Bandini has won after a sprint at the last bend (5: 13’ 17.33), second place for Lancioni Barbara (5: 13’ 17.40), third for Bettati Brunella (Team Scott – Etica’s; 5: 19’ 40”).
About the medio fondo, battle until the end between Giupponi Andrea, Team Bianchi Agos, and Chocol Michel, Team Scott – Etica’s, who has come in second in 3: 26’ 44” (winner’s time: 3: 26’ 43”). PRESS RELEASE 14/2006

GREAT NUMBERS FOR THE GRAN FONDO INTERNAZIONALE FELICE GIMONDI 2006

Ten days after, we draw conclusions about the eleventh edition of gran fondo run in Bergamo on 7th May.

Swalled the lactic acid and unloaded the adrenalin we had in our bodies, we can relax and have a look at numbers which marked the Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi 2006. 3852 competitors (144 women), 3200 able to cross the finishing line first (about 80 people, even if they finished their routes, are not in official results because their chips did not work or were not correctly placed). While competitors who chose the short or the long route are quite the same (962 and 959, respectively), the middle route had a big success (1194 athletes).
Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Ireland, Norway, The Netherlands, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and U.S.A.: these nations were ready at starting, 180 strangers confirmed that this competition belongs to Golden Bike circuit. The biggest nations were Switzerland and United Kingdom with 52 athletes.
Talking about Italian athletes, we must say that there were 17 regions and 62 provinces: Lombardia at the first place, Veneto at the second one and Piemonte at the third place.
Cycling is for everybody: 1988 and 1984 are the years in which the youngest Italian man and woman were born, 1981 refers to the youngest stranger, a boy who was born in Belgium. Most athletes belong to “40-55 years” group, it corresponds to 50% of all athletes.
Gianni Motta, Pierino Gavazzi, Michele Dancelli: these champions of the past accepted the invitation made by Felice Gimondi and went into the saddle again to remember past emotions. Near them, champions of the present: Roberto Locatelli, motor-cycling world champion in 2000 (125), run the middle route in 4:55:23. Fabio May, silver medal at the Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City (2002) was placed 31°(2:37:38, short route).
To better write about the Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi everybody should live it, starting at dawn and cycling until the finishing line. Like Giovanni Bruno, head of Sky Sport, and Claudio Bagni, editor in chief of “La Gazzetta dello Sport”, who finished their routes in 3:29:20 and in 3:29:21. Or one can decide to give up his desk and discover nature and sport. Carlo Pesenti, managing director at Italcementi, Mario Greco, managing director at A.I.P. Banca San Paolo, Corrado Sciolla, managing director at Albacom, and Andrea Mencattini, general manager at Generali Vita set a good example. All others have no choice, they must train for the twelfth edition of the Gran Fondo Internazionale Felice Gimondi. We wait for you, as many as usual.
